Would-be FMCSA boss takes aim at trucking safety in first Senate committee hearing
Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) Acting Administrator Robin Hutcheson went before the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation Wednesday, taking the first step toward potential confirmation as the agency's first full-time boss in almost three years. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg appointed Hutcheson Deputy Administrator in late January following the departure of Meera Joshi. As deputy administrator, Hutcheson also serves as the Acting Administrator, and President Biden nominated her for the role of Administrator in April. FMCSA hasn't had a full-time administrator since Ray Martinez, who stepped down from the post in October 2019. The job has since been held by Jim Mullen, Wiley Deck, Joshi and Hutcheson, each as acting administrator. Hutcheson steps into FMCSA at a time where transportation is enjoying heightened public awareness, and she pledged to continue ... READ MORE
Trucking Company Failures on the Rise
One of the hallmarks of the pandemic as it relates to trucking has been the unprecedented growth in the number of new, mostly very small, for-hire trucking companies. Since July 2020, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration has authorized just under 186,000 new trucking operations. To put that into perspective, the strongest 22 months of carrier growth prior to the pandemic, March 2018 through December 2019, saw fewer than 82,000 new carriers. The number of new carriers approved each month remains far above pre-pandemic levels, but it is starting to slow after March’s record. However, another notable trend is that the number of net revocations of operating authority — total revocations adjusted for reinstatements of authority — have been running at elevated levels since November and reached an all-time high in March, according to FTR’s analysis of FMCSA data. We would expect some inflation ... READ MORE
Brake Safety Week Is Aug. 21-27
Greenbelt, Maryland (June 7, 2022) – The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) has announced Aug. 21-27 as the dates for this year’s Brake Safety Week. Brake Safety Week is an annual commercial motor vehicle brake-safety inspection, enforcement and education initiative conducted by law enforcement jurisdictions in Canada, Mexico and the U.S. During Brake Safety Week, inspectors will conduct their usual North American Standard Level I and V Inspections and capture and report brake-related data to CVSA. The results will be released in the fall. Brake-related violations comprise the largest percentage of all out-of-service vehicle violations cited during roadside inspections, and according to last year’s three-day International Roadcheck data, brake systems and brake adjustment violations accounted for 38.9% of all vehicle out-of-service violations, the most of any category of vehicle violations. To address this, CVSA’s Brake Safety Week seeks to: READ MORE

Mike's Safety Tip
Bites and stings This time of year, the bugs are coming out of their winter naps. Young ticks are most active in late spring and summer. Be conscious of and avoid bites and stings. Protect yourself against the ticks that can carry Lyme disease if your projects involve working near woods, grassy fields or bushes. For example, tuck your pants in your socks or boots, consider using tick repellant and perform tick checks. Have a great week. Thanks Mike
